Edgar Azevedo is a photographer and visual artist born and raised in Salvador, Bahia (Brazil), where art pulses through everyday life and shapes his sensitivity. A self-taught creator, he found in photography not a product, but a language of memory, silence, and presence — a way of translating emotions, stories, and the ways in which he perceives the world.
His practice emerges from the dialogue between ancestry, the body, and Afro-diasporic spirituality, revealing what the eyes cannot always grasp. His research understands the Black body as a symbolic and political territory, the city as a field of hidden narratives, and ritual as an aesthetic gesture. Influenced by his experience within Candomblé, he incorporates into his images the strength of the invisible, balancing visual refinement with profound humanity.
Recognized by the British Fashion Council | NEW WAVE: Creatives, he was named one of 50 global creatives (2020), and has had work published on the covers of Vogue Brasil, Elle Brasil and Glamour, as well as featured in platforms such as DAZED, I-D, and Diet Prada. In 2023, he was included in FLF THE LIST by Forbes Life Brasil, highlighting 21 transformative names in contemporary art and fashion.
Alongside editorial production, he develops authorial projects such as Fronteiras Imaginárias, Ara Dudu, Awòrán — Cartografia dos Tons, and Abluir – Corpos Pretos, Águas sagradas, investigating identity, memory, and ancestry as layers that shape both the individual and the collective. His trajectory unfolds at the intersection of contemporary art and visual anthropology, proposing images that breathe ancestry and expand the ways we see the human.
For Edgar, photographing is above all an invitation: to rethink beauty standards, embrace singularities, and see one another with depth, presence, and care.

Autodidata, encontrou na fotografia não um produto, mas uma linguagem de memória, silêncio e presença — um modo de traduzir emoções, histórias e a forma como percebe o mundo.
Sua prática emerge do diálogo entre ancestralidade, corpo e espiritualidade afro-diaspórica, revelando aquilo que os olhos nem sempre alcançam. Sua pesquisa parte do corpo negro como território simbólico e político, da cidade como campo de narrativas ocultas e do ritual como gesto estético. Influenciado por sua vivência no Candomblé, incorpora à imagem a força do invisível, equilibrando refinamento visual e humanidade extrema.

Para Edgar, fotografar é sobretudo um convite: repensar padrões de beleza, acolher singularidades e enxergar o outro com profundidade, presença e cuidado.

My practice begins with the body — not only as form, but as a living territory of memory, spirituality, and ancestry. I was raised in Salvador, where the sacred and the everyday coexist without separation. It was within this crossing that I came to understand photography not as documentation, but as ritual — as breath, as listening.
I perceive the image as that which holds the invisible. The Black body, the center of my investigation, appears as presence that exceeds what history has tried to confine. It carries scars and celebrations, silences and vital force; it is both archive and future. My work seeks to honor this complexity, revealing layers that do not reveal themselves at first sight — what is felt before it is seen.
The images I create are in dialogue with the ritual gestures of Candomblé, with the healing force of water, with the skin as sacred territory, and with time as a spiral. More than representation, I aim to create encounters: between the self and the ancestral; between the city and the body; between the visible and what calls for listening.
Photography, for me, is an act of care. It is a way of returning dignity to the gaze, of affirming life, of shaping a space where beauty and spirituality walk together. Above all, my work seeks to open pathways to see the human with greater depth, presence, and truth.

Minha pesquisa nasce do corpo — não apenas como forma, mas como território vivo de memória, espiritualidade e ancestralidade. Cresci em Salvador, onde o sagrado e o cotidiano se tocam sem aviso, e foi nesse atravessamento que compreendi que a fotografia não é registro: é rito, é respiro, é escuta.
Entendo a imagem como aquilo que sustenta o invisível. O corpo negro, centro de minha investigação, aparece como presença que transcende o que a história tentou reduzir. Ele carrega cicatrizes, celebrações, silêncios e potências; é arquivo e futuro. Meu trabalho busca honrar essa complexidade, revelando camadas que não se mostram de imediato — aquilo que se sente antes de se ver.
As imagens que construo dialogam com gestos rituais do Candomblé, com a força das águas, com a pele como território sagrado e com o tempo como espiral. Mais do que representar, procuro criar encontros: entre o próprio e o ancestral, entre a cidade e o corpo, entre o visível e o que pede escuta.
Fotografar, para mim, é um ato de cuidado. É a possibilidade de devolver dignidade ao olhar, de afirmar vidas, de construir um espaço onde beleza e espiritualidade caminham juntas. Minha obra busca, acima de tudo, abrir caminhos para enxergar o humano com mais profundidade, presença e verdade.
